Returning to Purin-chan, One Year Later

I returned to one of my earliest AI music videos for a Melancholic Remix, drawing out the quiet goodbye that had always been hiding inside its sweetness.

Purin-chan sits in a cafe at sunset, eating a pudding. There is another pudding on her hat. It is a slightly strange, very on-brand place for this video to begin.

“Puru Puru Idol Purin (Melancholic Remix)” returns to “Puru Puru Idol Purin Legend,” a song and video I made a year earlier. A short version from that time is also still on TikTok.

The pudding idol who stayed with me

I made the original when I had only just begun creating music videos with AI. I used Kling for the generated motion, but the tool was far less capable than it is now, and I was still learning the basics of video editing. Many shots refused to move the way I imagined, and I was figuring out how a pile of uncertain clips could become one finished video.

Still, this particular song never quite left me.

Purin-chan wears a caramel dress and sings into a spoon-shaped microphone. The song is bright and playful, but its lyrics have always carried a tiny goodbye. She waits nervously in the refrigerator, realizes that she is destined to be eaten, and eventually sings farewell with a “spoon kiss.”

The sadness was there from the beginning, sitting right beside the joke. If I ever remixed the song, I wanted to spend a little more time with that part of it.

Sunset after the stage lights

The original centered on an idol singing beneath bright pink stage lights. For this version, I did not want to simply repeat that spectacle. I began to imagine the quieter hours after the performance instead.

The new images move through a wooden cafe, a small pudding shop, and warm orange light at the end of the day. Custard white, caramel brown and black, and cherry red remain in the costume, so Purin-chan is still immediately recognizable even as the mood around her settles.

From the brightness of the stage to a cafe at sunset.

The remix also shifts the sound around her. An anime-soundtrack scale meets the fine, restless motion of UK garage and the softer edges of lo-fi. The beat keeps moving forward, yet the song can feel a little like the walk home. That distance suited these images.

There is no fixed plot spelled out in the video. But if the original showed a pudding becoming an idol, this one may show her continuing to sing in somebody’s memory after the fun is over.

A continuation, not a correction

AI video tools and my own editing process have both changed over the past year. It is easier now to keep a visual mood together, and there are more ways to approach shots that were difficult the first time.

I did not want the new video to exist only as proof that the technology had improved. The original has a brightness that came from moving ahead before I fully knew what I was doing. Rather than erase that version, I wanted to pick up the small melancholy it had left behind and continue from there.

Sometimes a work that felt finished becomes the opening to another one after enough time has passed.

One year later, Purin-chan is trembling again—this time in the colors of sunset.
